When I mention to people that I am Vegan, apart from the typical “So where do you get your protein from?”, I usually get asked why I made the change. Why am I Vegan? Well, let me explain (I will try my best not to ramble).
I am Vegan because I love animals. You may be thinking that practically everyone loves animals (I mean who doesn’t love animals right?). But how could you claim to love something and then put it through pain and suffering and not to mention eat it? Just like us humans, animals are living beings who are, contrary to popular belief, intelligent and do in fact feel pain. I believe that they have as much right to live on this earth as we do and that we, the ‘superior beings’ do not own them and should not be the ones to determine whether or not they are killed. Many people are unaware of the harsh realities of slaughterhouses. “If you knew how meat was raised, you wouldn’t eat it” -Justin Timberlake. The way the animals are treated is quite frankly disgusting and let me just say that there is NO such thing as ‘humane slaughter’. How could slaughtering another being (usually done when the animals are still conscious) ever be humane? And why is there such a place that’s called a SLAUGHTERhouse? “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be Vegetarian” -Paul Mccartney. In the egg industry, male chicks are ground alive because they can’t produce eggs. In the dairy industry, calfs are taken from their mothers right after birth so that we can have the milk. Chickens and cows have their throats slit, both while still conscious. And this is nothing compared to the torture and mistreatment that these animals endure daily. If you have not already, I urge you to look at the footage linked below. It may be shocking but if it’s not good enough for your eyes, why is it good enough for your stomach? Every year in the U.S. ALONE, 9 BILLION chickens, 29 MILLION cows and 115 MILLION pigs are slaughtered. But on a more positive note, every year a Vegan saves approximately 198 animal lives and a Vegetarian saves approximately 100.

I am a Vegan for my health. Veganism is in fact the healthiest way to live. Free from bad cholesterol, at less risk of developing osteoporosis, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney disease, respiratory infections, high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer and diabetes (Just to name a FEW). Why not go Vegan? People may argue that Veganism is unhealthy and puts you at risk of developing deficiencies, however, there are countless studies that show the exact OPPOSITE of this. Did you know that it is legal for up to 400 million pus cells to be present in every litre of milk? Why drink milk that is intended for a calf in the first place? Eating eggs increases a person’s risk of developing diabetes by 68%!!! Researchers have found that those who consume 7 or more eggs a week have almost a 25% increased risk of DEATH. I am a Vegan because I care about the environment. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, water depletion, deforestation and species extinction. Did you know that animal agriculture is responsible for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions? Keep in mind that the entire transportation industry worldwide (boats, cars, buses, airplanes, etc) only account for 13% of these emissions. Going Vegan can reduce your carbon footprint by a staggering 50%! It takes 660 gallons of water to produce 1 beef burger. Animal agriculture is responsible for 55% of water use in the U.S. 91% of Amazon destruction is due to clearing land for… you’ve guessed it; Animal agriculture. Due to this rain-forest destruction, approximately 110 animal and insect species are lost EVERYDAY. If we continue fishing at the rates we are now, there will be NO fish in the sea by 2048. That’s in 31 years from now. As said by Albert Einstein, “Nothing will benefit health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as the evolution to a Vegetarian diet.”

Whether you make the change to Veganism (or even Vegetarianism…it’s a start) for the ethics, the environmental or health aspects, or even all three like I did, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Change must start somewhere. Be sure to educate yourself further using the videos and documentaries that I linked above. It may be overwhelming at first but take small steps and remember…education is key.
