How often should you really be washing your hair?

This topic has always been a controversial one. Everyone seems to have their own take on it and rightfully so. Everyone’s hair is different and requires individual care. And after all, who knows your hair better than you do. But is it possible that you’re washing your hair too often?

When this topic comes up with my straight-haired friends, I usually get the ‘I wash my hair every day’ or ‘every two days’ response. That seems to be a normal washing regime for a lot of people. But this can actually be hurting your hair more than helping it.

How often do you wash your curls? And do you use shampoo every wash? I asked some curl-friends over on Instagram and got a lot of ‘I wash once a week’ and ‘twice a week’ responses.

How often do I wash my hair?

For as long as I can remember, I washed my hair once a week. Like clockwork. And it worked for me. My hair was never super oily and it didn’t get dried out. But then recently, over the last couple of months, I started doing a bit more research and found out that once a week may actually (and shockingly) be too often.

My hair personally doesn’t get very oily at all and I’ve found myself washing every 2 two or so weeks.

Yes. WeekS.

Sometimes I even stretch it to 3 weeks. Now of course, my hair does tend to get dry and frizzy after a while so to battle this, I co-wash (washing using only conditioner) in between shampoos. This way, I’m adding moisture back to my hair, detangling it and not drying it out with shampoo.

I style my hair and use my products as normal and my curls have been THRIVING. I’ve been getting sooo much more volume than before and I couldn’t be happier.

Now before you tell me that washing my hair every 3 weeks is gross, let me intervene. This is my hair in it’s most natural state. I’ve had people tell me that washing my hair once a week (in the past) is gross. That just shows that they’ve never had to deal with a curly-hair wash day. Because believe me, it’s a hassle process.

Curly vs straight

Straight hair and curly hair differ in more ways than one. The twists and spirals that make curly hair curly also slow the movement of oils down the strands of hair. So you may find that your curly hair doesn’t get oily after days/weeks of not shampooing but someone with straight hair might experience oiliness after just a few days.

Water only washing?

While doing a bit of research I also came across something called ‘water only washing’. As the name suggests, this is when you wash your hair…with only water. This method excludes shampoo (and conditioner) completely as this tends to strip your hair of those natural oils. Instead, you allow your scalp to produce the oil, known as sebum, and you massage your scalp, allowing the oil to get onto the strands, eventually coating them. Essentially, a natural moisturizer. I’ve heard so many good things about this method on natural hair and I must say. I’m intrigued. Should I give it a try?

How often should you wash your hair?

There are so many factors to be considered. Here are the main ones.


If you have a more active lifestyle, you may need to wash you hair more often than others. Considering yoga and walking my dogs, I still am able to wash my hair very 2/3 weeks. But if you are let’s say, at the gym a few times a week, you may opt for more frequent wash days.

Skin type

If your skin naturally produces more oil, so will your scalp. This excess oil may require more washes and you may not be able to stretch the time between washes.

Hair texture

Again. curly vs straight. Curl hair may offer a bit more flexibility in this case.

All in all, everyone’s hair is different and you just have to find what works best for you and your hair. But give it a try. Push your wash day (not necessarily co-washing) back by a few days/weeks and see how it goes. It may surprise you.
