Now that you know what to expect from the world of blogging, are you ready to jump right in?
There are a few steps that you need to take before you can enter the blogosphere. Let’s go through them.
Pick a host site
Deciding which host site to go with could be a tough decision as there are so many to choose from. And of course, different sites offer different features so choose wisely. I’ve personally only ever worked with two sites and they couldn’t compare to each other.
I currently use WordPress and apart from a few glitches here and there, I have no complaints. I was able to learn the in and outs of the site pretty easily and from then onward, it was smooth sailing.
Decide on a niche
We touched on niches in part one of this series so I’m just going to touch briefly on that today. Your Niche determines the kind of content that you will be producing as well as your audience. Picking a niche, if you decide to, is a key step in identifying your blog as your own.
Pick a blog name
This should be one of the first things you do. The name of your blog, and by extension your domain name, is a crucial element that shouldn’t be overlooked. The name should be easy to remember, self-descriptive and to the point. Something that readers won’t forget.
Purchasing your domain
So you’ve picked a name for your blog. The next step is to decide whether or not you plan on purchasing your own domain. For a relatively low cost, you have the option of owning your domain aka website URL and removing the ‘.wordpress.com’ from your URL (may vary based on host site).
mikaylacherise.wordpress.com vs mikaylacherise.com
Purchasing a plan from WordPress can also prove advantageous for more reasons than one. You receive access to more themes, your own domain, more storage, ads are removed and so much more.
I waited a few months before purchasing a plan, just to ensure that I was ready to commit to blogging and wasn’t just going to throw the towel in after a few posts. I suggest you do the same, especially if you’re a newbie.
Chose a theme/layout
The layout of your site is another key aspect when creating a blog. First impressions are everything. You want your site to be welcoming and easy to navigate.
I suggest keeping it simple.
- Use light/subtle page & background colours.
- Use a simple and easy to read text/font size
- Keep pictures sharp and relevant
Launch your site and tell EVERYONE
This may seem a bit intimidating and scary at first but trust me. It works. Post the link to your social media and tell your followers about it. The more people that know about your new blog, the better. Not everyone is going to care or even check it out. But those who do click the link may actually read and follow and subscribe. And just like that, your blog is growing.
Marketing your blog is a crucial step in growth. Because after all. If no one knows about your blog, how will it grow?
And that brings us to the end of this post. The next topic of conversation is marketing a blog. Stay tuned!
